Create Memorable August Adventures

Shorter days, back to school sales, and the beginning of fall sports means summer is fading fast. But that doesn’t mean the fun needs to end. Late summer can be just as enjoyable as the start. Let’s not jump into fall too early but instead create memorable August adventures!

Often we leap into what’s next and miss what’s in front of us. This seems to happen at the end of each season. We’re so eager for the future sometimes we miss the present. Late summer holds some of my favorite memories, even though I’m melancholy anticipating summer’s end. This year, I resolve to make the most of each summer moment. If you’re feeling the same, here are some tips to create memorable August adventures…

August Adventure Ideas

  • Take a spontaneous day or weekend trip. Summer’s big vacation or plans may be over, but there are still August adventures to be had. Be a visitor in your own town. My husband and I did this the other night and had lots of fun, exploring both old and new spots. Check out what’s new within driving distance or in the next town over. Discover what may seem familiar. There’s always something new around the corner-be an explorer and go find it!
  • Read the book(s) you meant to this summer. Grab a comfy spot and that book and read for 20-30 minutes. Reading allows you to take a trip without even leaving home, strengthens your brain, and broadens your mental horizons. Chip away at your to-read list! Read aloud and activate even more brain power. Or listen to an audio version of that book on your road trip and double your August adventure! If you don’t have a book ready, venture to your local library and be immersed in suggestions!
  • Try a new restaurant or cuisine. You can take a trip with your taste buds by discovering new or different foods, restaurants, or simply by dining outside at your favorite spot. All create a different experience to engage your mind and senses. Choose some healthy foods to boost the brain benefit even more!
  • Learn or keep at a new exercise/sport. Did you take up a new sport or exercise this summer? Keep at it. There are some sports/activities I only do in summer. Each year, I vow to improve, but that takes practice, so let’s just do it! Each practice session or time engaged in something new creates unique neural pathways making us more proficient. So, don’t be dismayed if it’s still a bit difficult. Practice, learn, grow, and create healthy habits!
  • Focus on the present to fix the memory. Each summer and each day we are making memories. The difference between remembering them or not is in our focused attention. If we aren’t paying attention, we will not remember the moment. Taking photos to help remember is fine. But if we stay focused, are truly present, and use memory techniques, we’ll make all our August adventure moments memorable.

Don’t let summer’s fade lessen your memories of it. Have fun, be present, and engage your brain when you create memorable August adventures!
