Resolve to Stay Focused

Historically, new year’s resolutions fade by the second week of January. And here we are, so how are you doing? Life is a journey filled with choices, so let’s resolve to stay focused. If there have been slip ups, less than perfect days or choices, don’t be dismayed, choose differently next time.

Just because a poor choice has been made, doesn’t mean our resolutions or goals are gone forever. Like the saying goes, let’s ‘get back on the horse’ and resolve to stay focused on what matters. There are reasons we made a resolution, goal, or intention and chances are it was to better ourselves in some way. One lesser decision doesn’t negate the reason behind the resolution or the ability to make a better one.

Focusing on the reason for our resolutions creates momentum to move forward. Not all progress is massive and noticeable, but it all adds up and counts. So, if progress has been slow, not that rewarding, and you’re tempted to quit, don’t. Resolve to stay focused on the big picture.

Tips to Stay Focused:

  • Create a visual reminder of your goal/resolution. Some people create a vision board, placing visual reminders of their goals on display to see daily. A simple circle on the calendar, object in your daily vision path, or motivational word taped to the bathroom mirror also work well.
  • Remove obstacles toward the goal. If we’re trying to lose weight or get in better physical shape, having junk food in the cabinets is counterproductive. Turn off the TV if you’re trying to boost your brain. Take away temptations to make better choices easier.
  • Invest in healthy options. Trying to eat healthier means more vegetables and fruit in your grocery cart and out on the counter. Investing our time matters just as much. Prep healthy foods ahead and they become easier choices. Read a book, play a game, do a mental fitness puzzle or go for a walk if the goal is a healthier mind and memory
  • Remember the habit loop! One healthy choice is good, two is better, and three creates momentum. The more we repeat what we want, the more we create habits. Our brains LOVE habits as they create paths of lesser resistance. The reason new things are more difficult is because our brain must think through them. Each time we repeat them, the easier it is, and our brain can go on autopilot. So, repeat those good choices and create new habits!

It may be a few weeks since you created a resolution or intention for the new year. If you’ve lost your momentum or will power, remember your reason and resolve to stay focused!
