It’s been a fun week celebrating our 7th anniversary! The fun continues, but before that, let’s talk habits. We all have them. Some are good, some maybe not-so-good. In our year of examining habits, it’s important to realize how they can both help our memory and also hinder it.
Recently in a presentation about how to remember names, I discussed my habit for remembering names. It consists of various parts which I can adapt to any situation. When I consistently do it, names are remembered. But just like any other habit, once you stop or even let up on the routine a little, the habit loop will fail.
Numerous habits help memory. My name habit and doing mental fitness daily are just two examples. But then there are those hindering body or mind habits. Eating junk food, not exercising or getting enough sleep are prime examples of habits impacting both body and mind.
Lately, in the rush of travel, holidays and other out-of-the-norm events, I’ve slipped on some of my helpful habits. Maybe this happens to you too, but never fear-we can reset our habit loops and push forward toward memory wellness!
I pride myself on being organized. However, my organization habit has faltered lately. It’s impacted my memory and general flow of life. When the menu plan and grocery list aren’t organized, impulse buys find their way into my cart. When calendars aren’t updated, things can get missed or forgotten. Staying up late organizing what should have been done sooner impacts my sleep, body, and mind.
It’s time to reset my habits to avoid these vicious cycles. I said no to plans last weekend and spent time resetting my organization habit. With another busy week, this reset hit the mark. Now I’m poised to hit the ground running and make the most of my moments.
Are any of your helpful habits faltering? Find a few moments to assess both your helpful and hindering habits and push reset if needed. Doing so will get you back on track to mind and body wellness.
